Even in a few minutes long video, neil blomkamp managed to humanize these aliens. They make weird sounds and look horrible but we feel sorry for them. He did the same in district 9, which by the way is a masterpiece. He's really talented.

He was a one hit wonder, but man oh man, that one hit.... truly special. The hype surrounding blomkamp after district 9.... hype over a potential halo movie, hype for that alien sequel with sigourney back on board.... the blomkamp hype was fukin real. And then.... well, elysium dropped. And the only thing still present about the blomkamp hype was his awesome visual style. Which, remains to this day. Unfortunately, thats the only bit of the hype he managed to live up to. District 9 seems to be lightning in a bottle, and for him, it clearly was. Whether it was the people he had working on it around him, or just genuinely a flukey, everything-lined-up-perfectly one off, which is what i definitely seems to be, im still glad it happened. Not much more has come of the blomkamp hype, not much at all. But man, we will ALWAYS have this fucking dope, masterpiece scifi classic. Always. And for me, hes done enough just in delivering that to us. Hes done enough.

I love the dichotomy that is presented here. And District 9 touched on this too. The people of Johannesburg are depicted as angry even hateful towards the aliens. But when you look beyond emotion you realize that much of their concerns are legitimate. They didn’t ask for an alien refugee camp in their back yard. They don’t understand the creatures, their motivations or even why they are hear on earth. You have armed shopkeepers telling you that the aliens just steal food from stalls, children scared of ufos flying around at night and a possible food/supply chain crisis due to motherships disrupting air traffic. On the other side, the aliens, for reasons unknown have made earth their home. Perhaps they really are refugees but notice how DEMANDING they are of the hapless population. “Give us electricity, give us water.” Not even saying why, no hint as to their intentions. Just ordering their hosts to accommodate them. For all we know, they need electricity to charge their weapons and can use water for chemical weaponry. Their not human, we can’t simply default that they need water to survive. But they refuse to explain anything about themselves. All of this inevitably leads to conflict. Which is the theme of a poorly handled migrant crisis.

Wow great job. He basically gathered real interviews about zimbawe refugees (the aliens) and substituted refugees with aliens in the filming. What a great idea. Once this short came out same producer approached blomkamp and asked him to create District 9 around this idea. Wow
